HOW WE ROLL
Amongst the polling and gameplay of the app and live shows, Sheepoll is trying to address some bigger issues. We want to refocus society’s engagement with technology to improve interpersonal interaction whilst coercing both a deeper exploration of the self and an appreciation of diversity in others.
We also see Sheepoll as a powerful tool to empower performers and comedians to gain regular paid work and accelerate their industry experience. With Sheepoll, we hope to help disrupt the live entertainment industry and give new and innovative alternatives to the likes of pub trivia and standup comedy.
Finally, everything we do, it's gotta be fun. The quirky, absurd, outrageous and unusual - we love to explore it all and package it in a way that makes it enjoyable for all to ingest. We already made trivia more fun with Quiz Meisters. Now we are taking that question-asking experience and removing all the facts to explore the inner ewe!
Using technology to improve social engagement
Concerns are growing that the practical impact of mobile device use is making humans more interested in their online lives and less interested in each other. This dilemma has been at the forefront of our development, encouraging us to utilise aspects of mobile device technology to spark human-to-human debate and interaction.
Yes, the Sheepoll app is central to every mode of Sheepoll, but the use of it is only a small aspect of the overall Sheepoll experience. The app is used to pose questions, capture responses and reveal results, but those digital aspects become triggers for vocal debate and expression of opinion, which in turn, become the entertainment. The questions are purposely written to divide audiences, spark imaginations and force further consideration. Under the format of the live show, the host cleverly orchestrates and encourages deliberation, increasing the depth of argument and level of audience interaction throughout the show.
In some ways, we use the familiarity of digital gaming to lure people in and get them comfortable with crossing the barrier from online opinion to expressing and debating in person. We have found that by the end of our live shows, audience members are stealing our microphones to passionately defend their stance. Under the gameshow format and guise of comedy, it becomes as safe place for people to do just that.
Deeper exploration of self and values
The ‘Age of Social Media’ and the advancement of phone technology has given power to the masses to easily express what is valued as important. But take a quick look on your latest Instagram and Facebook feed and you’ll notice the values echo the ghosts of advertisements past, celebrating consumerism. Perfect photos of perfect meals, perfect holiday destinations, perfect gym apparel and perfect relationships.
At Sheepoll, we want to challenge this. We want to celebrate the gritty, the mundane, the everyday. We want to get under the skin and into the minds of our users and encourage them to question why they think what they think. In many ways, our questions engage the audience to dissect life much like a comedian does, but the process is shared and collaborative. The result is both entertaining and insightful.
In the end, it doesn’t really matter what people think, we just hope that their answers are considered and thought through. By encouraging this mindset in a fun and social setting, we can start to influence society to make more considered choices in life, rather than just (pardon the pun) follow the flock.
Celebrating the diversity of others
When designing the gameplay of Sheepoll, we very much wanted to reward both the popular opinion and the minority opinion, as we value both sides as contributing importance to society.
Originally, the concept was called ‘Majority Rules’, but the polling wasn’t about winning an opinion, it was about revealing what an audience thought. The minority vote gave just as much insight as the majority vote, so we decided, on the gaming side of things, to reward both the Black Sheep and White Sheep equally.
This act helps to remove the hierarchical nature of winning, and in turn, reduces the ‘I’m better than you’ mentality. Instead, everyone is placed on a scale and we simply have one person representing each end of that scale.
Empowering performers and comedians
We believe Sheepoll offers a new platform for performers to practice their craft and provide comedians valuable industry experience to help forge viable careers in hosting and comedy. By combining a platform that bridges the gap between performer and venue (in development Phase 3), along with the Sheepoll platform, we can empower performers to sign their own weekly Sheepoll shows through a concept that works like AirBnb for entertainment.
The comedy within Sheepoll is essential for making it accessible and enjoyed by the masses. Take the act of polling an audience without that comedic edge and it can be a somewhat dry experience. Sheepoll questions are therefore a careful blend of morally challenging and self- reflective conundrums sprinkled with absurd, quirky and imaginative responses. Model these under a gameshow-type format and you have a unique and entertaining experience.
Our live-show versions of Sheepoll (Opinion Trivia and The Opinion) offer a few advantages to comedians and performers over traditional trivia and standup comedy. Starting out in comedy, you fight to get a couple sets that last only a few minutes. There is pressure to come up with new content, and when you finally devise content that works, you are often required to deliver the same content again and again.
The format of Sheepoll is a performer’s dream. There is new stimuli to work with every week, and plenty of room to write in preconceived material or flex your impromptu muscle. Also, with the increase of television gameshows hosted by or featuring comedians, the format of our proposed shows is an ideal breeding ground for that format of TV entertainment.
It also lends itself to being an amazing live TV online streamed show, where home viewers from all over the world interact with, contribute to and be part of the show.

HOW DOES THE APP WORK?
Your crew turns up to the show using the Sheepoll app. They download it (if they haven't already), create a Baabaatar - their online sheep avatar - and sign into the unique game made for that show. The host/s do their thing and put on a show and use the app to ask polls, run games, display results and award prizes. People laugh, drink, mingle and have a good time, and occasionally use their phone to get involved...
